During the periods of Removal and during the Trail of Death, the Potawatomi people had to not only reconcile with their land being stolen and being forced to walk thousands of miles, but also had to adapt to unhospitable environments that did not carry the resources they depended on from the Great Lakes region. This lesson discusses traditional Potawatomi methods of foraging as well as the adaptation to the environments they were forced into.

In 1838, over 850 Potawatomi were forcibly removed from their homeland in Indiana, embarking on a 660-mile journey to Kansas known as the Trail of Death. This tragic event led to the death of 42 individuals, mostly children and the elderly. Our classes delve into this history, offering insights into the resilience and strength of the Potawatomi people.
