Feathers

Eagles molt from mid-March to late September, and during this time, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Eagle Aviary staff collects feathers at sunrise every day. They clean, smudge and sort them according to type and size before safely storing them in cedar cabinets, awaiting to fill CPN tribal members’ requests.

Feather FAQ

You can download the feather application online and fill it out and return it via email to aviary@potawatomi.org or mail it to:

Citizen Potawatomi Nation
Attn: Eagle Aviary
1601 Gordon Cooper Dr.
Shawnee, Ok 74801

You must be an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. However, you do not need to provide us a copy of your ID. Your application will be verified by Tribal Rolls before we fill your request.

We will only have naturally molted feathers from Bald and Golden Eagles. We will work with applicants to fill their requests in a way that best fit their needs. If you don’t know what particular feathers you need feel free to call or email us for help.

All completed feather requests are sent to Tribal Rolls for verification of enrollment. Once verified, those applications are sent to the Chairman to be signed, as required by U.S. Fish and Wildlife. Signed requests are returned to the Aviary and filled in the order they were requested. The fulfillment of some requests will vary based on availability of specific types of feathers. Once filled, the requested feathers are smudged and sent to you via the mail. If you live locally we will call you and give you the option to pick up your feathers if you prefer. If you have an address change, we ask that you email us so we can update your application.

No, we are two separate entities. We are a Native American Eagle Aviary, operating under an Indian Religious Use permit. That permit gives us the ability to house and care for injured Eagles and hand out naturally molted feathers to tribal members. The National Eagle Repository is run by the U.S. Federal Government. You can request feathers from either facility, or both.
